History
The history of Escondido is a rich one that started long before its incorporation as a city on October 9, 1888. It all started with a Spanish Governor Micheltorena`s land grant to Juan Bautista Alvarado 12,653 acres in Rincon del Diablo. This valley was known as Devil`s Corner. It was used for growing grapes, citrus, and herding sheep and cattle.
The earliest residents of the area were native tribes, including the Diegueno, Tipai and Ipai, who are still a presence today in the area.
